IMI Executive Director,
BHVI Sydney,
Assistant Professor
Discipline of Optometry
University of Canberra, Australia
Doctor Monica Jong is the Executive Director of the International Myopia Institute (IMI), the global expert body focused on advancing myopia research and education to reduce the future negative impacts of increasing levels of myopia on eye health outcomes.
Monica is also an Assistant Professor in Optometry at the University of Canberra, and a Visiting Fellow of the School of Optometry and Vision Science, University of New South Wales Sydney.
Her clinical research is focussed on myopia control, high myopia risk factors and the public health impact of myopia.
She is also involved in advocating for the recognition of myopia and high myopia as a major eye health issue through her role as the secretary of the Refractive Error Working Group in the International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness.
Monica received her optometry degree and PhD from the University of Melbourne, and her thesis examined the relationship between retinal structure and visual function in retinitis pigmentosa using OCT. She was also the recipient of the David and Sandra Smith Fellowship which allowed her to pursue her postdoctoral studies in ocular blood flow imaging in Type 2 diabetes at the Department of Ophthalmology, University of Toronto.
Monica has authored numerous peer reviewed articles, and co-authored the WHO report on
“The Impact of myopia and high myopia.”
She also co-created the first global online myopia management education program at BHVI, and speaks regularly at key international meetings.
This talk will provide an overview of the International Myopia Institute (IMI), a global group of expert myopia researchers, and its work in the advocacy of myopia and high myopia as a public health issue. Already, the IMI has published white papers providing evidence based guidance to practitioners, researchers and policy makers, with overarching aims to prevent vision impairment and blindness associated with higher levels of myopia. The future directions will also be presented.
